Even at the end of an era FIFA 23 marks another year

EA's football simulation behemoth has returned for one last moment of glory following a public split with its licensor with the tagline "The World's Game" ahead of a painful title change, changing its name to EA Sports FC, coming in the year following. The tagline, however, transcends its bittersweet appeal since, for all intents and purposes FIFA 23 fittingly does feel like the same game everyone has played over the last few seasons, with its reliable high-quality gameplay, and the same familiar frustrations.

Even at the end of an era FIFA 23 marks another year of careful attrition from EA in which a number of strategic and aesthetic changes are incorporated into its solid gameplay plan. It's also a title which feels both supported and sucked into its Ragnarok status, grudgingly taking down a ruby-red curtain while the football game genre is thrown into a tidal wave of chaos.

Theatrical alterations to gameplay, like the ferocious Power Shots ensure the FIFA name goes out with a bang rather than a whimper. By holding the bumpers while pressing shoot turns your striker into one of the raiders with an interruptible attack, the camera focusing on the ball as they lace it, sending bootstrap shockwaves booming through the PS5's control speaker. If you get the incorrect angle, FIFA 23's newly improved goalkeepers may be able to stop the attack with their individual simulated fingers they have saved me bacon several occasions.

Get it right, though and if the player is in enough space chances are it will get caught in on the outside of the net, no matter how far you are. This meta-shaking type of shot teases out the halcyon days of Francesco Totti hit-and-hope long shots used in early 2010s FIFA however don't be worried the online multiplayer game is filled with fast wingers who pass it across the box on breaks. So why not have a blast and be a little fun, eh?
